Prolactin (PRL), also known as lactotropin, is a protein best known for its role in enabling females to produce milk. While prolactin is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland in both men and women, women have slightly higher basal level of prolactin than men due to an estrogen-related rise at puberty and a corresponding decrease at menopause. During pregnancy, prolactin level increases progressively to 10 and 20 times of normal value, declining to non-pregnant levels by 3-4 weeks post-partum.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone produced in both men and women by gonadotropic cells in the anterior pituitary gland. LH, also called interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH) in men, is a glycoprotein that stimulates the production of testosterone in men, which plays a role in sperm production. With respect to women, LH helps regulate the menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced primarily in the liver of a developing fetus. It can be found in maternal blood and in amniotic fluid since it is secreted into fetal serum. A great increase of AFP concentration in several malignant diseases mostly is primary hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminoma testicular cancer. High concentration of AFP is also found in patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal tract cancer, viral hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis, adenocarcinomas of lung, pancreas, and gall bladder. Since AFP is well known to be an important prognostic indicator of non-seminoma testicular cancer, its most definitive role is on monitoring post-treatment clinical status and the post therapeutic evaluation of patients.

The Optical Q™ AFP reagent test is thus used for monitoring the potential patient above.
