Revi neuromodulation: A new approach to UUI treatment

Urinary urgency incontinence (UUI) is a chronic and often debilitating condition affecting millions of people. The urge to urinate frequently or unexpectedly can greatly disrupt daily life and well-being. While various medications and surgical interventions exist to manage UUI, many are associated with side effects or require extensive follow-up care. 

The Revi neuromodulation device offers a promising new option for UUI treatment. Surgeons at UChicago Medicine have become pioneers in this field by being the first medical center in Illinois to successfully implant the Revi device. Urologist Dr. Ervin Kocjancic led the procedure and highlights its significance: "I am really happy that we can offer this innovative approach to all our patients and very proud to be at the real forefront of medicine as the first in the state to have done this surgery."

Dr. Kocjancic emphasizes the patient experience as a priority, stating, "With this minimally invasive approach, done using local anesthesia, patients are able to regain a normal life without being at the mercy of their malfunctioning bladders."

The Revi device operates in a fundamentally different manner than traditional UUI treatments. Unlike other interventions that require batteries or complex circuitry, Revi is a battery-free implant. The implant is placed near the posterior tibial nerve, located near the ankle, and is activated by an external wearable device. This approach is designed to reduce complications and the need for frequent surgeries. 

The external device delivers a gentle stimulation to the tibial nerve, which in turn calms the bladder's overactivity, helping patients gain control over urinary urgency. Since the implant is battery-free, the risks and challenges associated with implanted power sources are eliminated, making the treatment more accessible and reducing the need for maintenance or replacements. 

The procedure performed at UChicago Medicine represents a significant step forward in UUI treatment, providing patients with a less invasive and potentially more effective option to improve their quality of life.
