Advanced 3D printing technology improves tissue engineering

Researchers at the University of Bayreuth, led by Prof. Leonid Ionov, have achieved a significant breakthrough in tissue engineering with the development of 3D printing technology. By integrating hydrogels and fibers in a single device, this innovative process enables the production of constructs with fibrous structures and uniaxial cell alignment, as reported in the journal Advanced Healthcare Materials. "The insights gained in this study are of great importance for the production of tissues and in particular tissues with fibrous structures and uniaxial alignment of cells such as connective and muscle tissue," explains Prof. Leonid Ionov.

In a recent study, Prof. Leonid Ionov and his team explored the potential of various hydrogels for 3D printing tissues. Hydrogels, water-retaining polymers, were combined with fibers to create composite materials using 3D printing technology integrated with touch-spinning. Touch spinning, a scalable process for producing fibers, was seamlessly integrated into the 3D printing device for the first time.

The insights from this study hold immense significance for tissue production, particularly tissues with fibrous structures and uniaxial cell alignment crucial for connective and muscle tissues. The combination of hydrogel and fiber systems simplifies processing requirements for hydrogels, enhancing their mechanical properties and promoting tissue formation.

Published in collaboration with Prof. Elisabetta Ada Cavalcanti-Adam and researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, the study introduces a novel approach for producing multilayer bioink fiber composites. The integration of hydrogel and fiber systems offers promising prospects for tissue engineering and biofabrication.

The invention of this innovative device has led to the establishment of "biovature GmbH," a startup spearheaded by PD habil. Alla Synytska, co-founder, and CEO. Financial support from the German Research Foundation (DFG) research cluster SFB/TRR 225 has been instrumental in advancing this research.
