The Fraunhofer Institutes for Laser Technology ILT and for Production Technology IPT developed a new AI-assisted high-throughput process that enhances cell isolation. This presents vast implications for personalized medicine, drug development, and clinical research.

Key advancements with AI and laser integration

The LIFTOSCOPE combines cutting-edge AI algorithms with laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) technology to achieve rapid and precise cell isolation. By integrating three high-tech processes into one device, the system identifies and transfers cells within microseconds, ensuring high survival rates exceeding 90 percent.

Enhanced cell recognition and transfer process

Through the integration of the patented MIR LIFT process and high-speed camera imaging, the project team achieves unparalleled precision in cell identification and transfer. AI algorithms enable the recognition of specific cell types, including pluripotent stem cells, high-producer cells, and immune cells, enhancing versatility and accuracy.

Optimized process efficiency

Continuous refinement of the LIFT process enables fully automated cell recognition and transfer, minimizing process time while maximizing throughput. With advancements in high-precision actuators and imaging technology, the system achieves single-cell sorting rates of up to 100 cells per second, paving the way for rapid advancements in cell-based research. “Depending on the cell type, up to 100 percent of all cells survive this procedure,” explains Dr. Nadine Nottrodt, Head of the Biofabrication Group, who is supervising the joint development project at Fraunhofer ILT together with project manager Richard Lensing.

As the project progresses towards market maturity, the Fraunhofer team invites interested parties to explore the LIFTOSCOPE at analytica 2024. With its potential to improve personalized medicine, pharmaceuticals, and clinical practice, this technology represents a significant leap forward in cell sorting capabilities.
