This year on 05/10/2020 the Day Against Stroke is being celebrated under the title "The digital helpers are coming!". A stroke is still one of the most frequent causes of death. Every year, around 270,000 people suffer a stroke in Germany alone. When a blood vessel in the brain bursts or becomes blocked, the cells in the brain can no longer be adequately supplied. As a result, they are damaged or die.
In such a situation, especially quick acting is required. The faster the treatment is carried out, the less damage the person affected suffers. If the symptoms are not clear, the FAST test is often used in private situations. With the help of this test, the main symptoms of a stroke, such as paralysis, numbness or speech disorders, can be checked quickly.
FAST is short for Face, Arms, Speech and Time. The test requires a number of movements to be performed, which cannot be carried out properly in the event of a stroke. For example, the person should smile so that a possible paralysis shows up on the face. The arms should be raised, because paralysis would show up here as well. If the person says a simple sentence, a speech disorder can be detected. Lastly, time plays an essential role if any of the symptoms are present.
Nowadays there is a large number of apps that can be used as alerts or information sources against strokes. Due to the current situation around the corona virus, fewer people come to the clinics. But in case of a stroke, immediate treatment is essential. An app now examines the symptoms using the FAST test. If a stroke occurs, there is also an app that can be used for aftercare.
The Stroke Association has a campaign during national stroke awareness month called "Make May Purple" This campaign aims to raise awareness and funds for stroke patients.
In addition, on the 10/29/2020 will be the international world stroke day to act as a reminder for the constant risks of a stroke. They have an application called the "stroke riskometer" which can calculate the risk of a stroke as well.
